Liposuction Procedure

The Technicalities of the Liposuction Procedure

Everyone knows today that liposuction is one of the most common and popular methods for cosmetic surgery. However, how many people really know what is involved in the liposuction procedure? Do you know the risks that a liposuction procedure involves or what needs to be done to prevent these? There are many questions about the liposuction procedure that need to be answered. Let’s go through some of these questions and get some clarity on this method.

Liposuction Procedure

This method involves the cosmetic removal of fat layers from the different parts of your body. Generally, liposuction is done on the face, neck, upper arms, abdomen, thighs, buttocks, and calves. This procedure is usually done under local anesthesia, though sometimes it is done with general anesthesia.

The Steps

The fat is removed by first making extremely tiny incisions in the skin where the fat is to be removed; then a series of injections are done carefully under the skin through which the fat layer is stretched and expanded with an anesthetic fluid. Lastly, a thin hollow stainless steel is inserted and the fat is extracted with a powerful vacuum suction.

Promote Fast Healing

Once the procedure is done, it takes a few days to a few weeks for the skin to regain its natural look. The healing process can be promoted by a few critical things that have to be done post surgery:

  • Walking - You should get up and walk as soon as the anesthesia wears off. Most of the times the patient can walk away from the hospital within a few hours from the completion of the liposuction. However, in some cases – particularly when fat is removed from a large area or in large quantity – it is advisable to stay overnight in the hospital for observation. In these cases there is a slight possibility of going into shock and when this happens immediate medical attention is required.
  • Compression Garment - You should use the liposuction compression garment as soon as you come out of the liposuction surgery. This garment helps in the rapid drainage of the anesthetic fluid and also in the restoring of the skin’s elasticity in the shortest time possible.
  • No Strenuous Exercise - Avoid exercises and lifting of any weights during the recuperation period (somewhere between 2 weeks and 2 months).

Minor Risks

Liposuction procedure is known as the cosmetic surgery with the least amount of side effects or risks. Nonetheless, there are a few risks such as blood clot formations, bruising, loss of sensation, and lumpiness in the area. However, all of these are easy to redress with a simple repeat of the procedure and/or localized attention.
