This study retrospectively reviewed cases of black widow spider bite treated with black widow antivenom in the California Poison Control System electronic database, identifying 96 eligible patients. The most common signs and symptoms recorded included generalized pain (91%), local erythema (57%). muscle cramping/rigidity (43%), and abdominal pain (41%)
DISCUSSION: Despite a clinically evocative appearance, the diagnosis of lupus tumidus was ruled out in our patient by histopathological features, and associated systemic lupus erythematosus was repeatedly refuted on the basis of clinical and laboratory data. We suggest that the specific histological images of intraluminal deposits within the dermal vessels seen in this patient, although not typical of thrombosis, are associated with APS. The clinical remission seen from the start of antiplatelet treatment could be due to the action of these drugs against the obstruction of small-calibre dermal vessels.

Combined use of autologous skin graft and acellular dermal substitute Integra® allowed the satisfactory recovery of the patient who was discharged after 82 days from the trauma. To analyse the characteristics and the quality of the healing tissues we performed a videocapillaroscopy study to assess the microcirculatory pattern of the autologous skin grafted on the dermal substitute in comparison with the autologous skin grafted on granulation tissue.

A novel splicing mutation in FKBP10 causing osteogenesis imperfecta with a possible mineralization defect
28, Dec 2011We report the case of a patient with an initially mild and then progressively severe form of osteogenesis imperfecta due to a novel homozygous splicing mutation in FKBP10 (intron 8 c.1399+1G> A), which results in aberrant mRNA processing and consequent lack of FKBP65 chaperone.Although this mutation does not affect collagen type I post translational modifications in dermal fibroblasts, the histomorphometric pattern of our patient’s bone sample showed a mineralization defect possibly due to the mutation in FKBP10.Highlights: ► New FKBP10 mutation has been found. ► FKB10 mutation could cause OI with a mineralization defect
